Are Children at Higher Risk for Radon Exposure

Amy Newcomer • January 13, 2024

Lung cancer risk increases for both children and adults who are exposed to radon in the home. However, most people are exposed to small levels of environmental radon without consequence. Unfortunately, children usually consume higher levels of radon than adults in the same household.

Reasons for Increased Risk

Radon is a toxic gas that sticks close to the floor of the home. This means that the smallest children, who are also closest to the floor, are directly breathing the radon. Because children have a higher respiratory rate than adults, they are also taking in a higher volume of the poisoned air in the environment.

Although radon is dangerous, it's also odorless and colorless, so most people don't even realize that exposure is happening. Keep your family save by having your home's radon levels checked by a certified and experienced air quality professional.

As the year ends and winter conditions set in, it’s important to make sure your emergency kit is current and fully stocked. Check expiration dates on food, water, and medications, and replace anything outdated. Confirm that you have working flashlights, fresh batteries, a first-aid kit, and essential supplies like warm blankets and a phone charger. An updated emergency kit ensures your household is prepared for winter storms or unexpected situations.

When designing your home, each room requires its own lighting approach — and the dining room is no exception. Choosing the Right Light for Your Dining Table Start by deciding where your dining table will sit in the room. Positioning the fixture above the table is far easier than trying to adjust the furniture later. In many cases, the lighting should be centered over the table, even if that means it isn’t centered within the room itself. Good lighting enhances both the function and style of your dining space. With the right placement and fixture, you can create a warm, inviting atmosphere that complements your décor.

Keeping your home in good condition requires staying on top of routine maintenance — and changing your air filters is one task you shouldn’t overlook. When filters go too long without being replaced, your HVAC system becomes less efficient, leading to higher heating and cooling bills. It can also put extra strain on the system, increasing the risk of clogs or breakdowns. To prevent these problems, be sure to replace air filters regularly and schedule professional HVAC servicing at least once a year. Need guidance on maintaining your system? Contact us for help.

If you’re preparing to sell your home, adding features that raise its value is always a smart move. One upgrade many sellers overlook is installing a fireplace. In today’s real estate market, fireplaces are highly appealing, and homes that include them often list for about 13% more than the national median sale price. Gas fireplaces, in particular, are especially popular right now thanks to their convenience and modern style. Choosing a gas option could give your property an even stronger advantage when it hits the market. Not sure if a fireplace is the right investment for your home? Reach out to us for guidance.
